In addition to a long and illustrious career in editorial, commercial, and fine art photography, Pete Turner's work has graced some of the most revolutionary and provocative album covers in the history of the medium. This fall Rizzoli will publish, The Color of Jazz: Album Cover Photographs by Pete Turner, a comprehensive celebration of fifty years of memorable album covers that benefited from Turner's unmistakable look.

Pete Turner's commercial photography has produced many distinctive photographs that have yielded much great art in advertising, including major clients, Adobe, Bell-Atlantic, BMW Motorcycles, Epson, Kohler, among many others. But it is his work with records that got Turner involved in the jazz world in which album covers became a showcase for his images. Due to the enduring nature of records, they remain in the public eye far longer than advertising and editorial photography, therefore the cover images become iconic. From Count Basie, John Coltrane, and Stan Getz, to Quincy Jones, Freddie Hubbard and Steely Dan, Pete Turner has provided cover photographs for jazz's finest. A significant number of album projects were the result of Turner's collaboration with famed jazz producer Creed Taylor, who was the first to place the photographer's images in a music context. As a result, Turner started an enduring relationship with the prestigious jazz labels, Impulse, Verve, and CTI; and he simultaneously pushed the medium of photography to achieve an uncompromising statement in bold color and composition that became his signature.

With the increasing digitalization of audio recordings, vinyl record collecting has become an underground phenomenon. Far from being obsolete, LP's have earned a cult-like respect from urban DJ's, musicians, and audiophiles. The Color of Jazz takes an intimate look back to the heyday of vinyl and showcases over 100 records and their art in close-to-original size; many of which are rare and highly collectable. Stanley Turrentine's Sugar, Milt Jackson's Cherry, Joe Farrell's Canned Funk, Airto's Fingers, and Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth--just a short list of Pete Turner classics that firmly set the mood before the needle touches down.
